  • Don Roger DinnerBeing a giant dork for musical theater, New York history, arguments about New York history, arguments about musical theater, objectifying women, backhanded compliments (”You’re not fat anymore”), awkward dinners, and regaining self-confidence by going home with a self-proclaimed “still growing” burger-eating dude, I enjoyed nearly every second of last night’s Mad Men episode (Season 3, Episode 2, “Love Among The Ruins”).

Roger Sterling’s cynical ambivalence towards his ex-wife came back to stab him in the form of his daughter’s disrespect, Don Draper bumped up against the glass ceiling of his narrow-focused overseas bosses, Cosgrove got a leg up in the Ken/Pete Head of Accounts dance-off, Betty’s Dad continued his metamorphosis into Junior Soprano, and the episode concluded after a lengthy Don Draper “This girl is making me think about life and I’m probably gonna bang her” camera shot. In short, it was everything I demand from a weekly Mad Men episode.

Peggy BarThis morning, I was in the middle of typing a “how good was Mad Men?” instant message to Michelle when she pre-empted my enthusiasm with a “how boring was Mad Men last night?” reversal. Unsure what more she wanted from the episode, I asked Michelle to explain her discontent, and she offered this argument:

“Admittedly, I watched last night’s Mad Men following a day of San Diego Zoo-related activities and a single strawberry wine cooler. That being said, I found the episode similar to the African Dung Beetle: Extremely boring. Face it: An hour of Don suggestively stroking a lawn would have been far more exciting than the antics that went down last night. But maybe, just maybe, these feelings about last night’s episode are born from embarrassment, as Peggy Olson’s Broadway-in-the-Mirror singing antics followed by leaving a stranger’s apartment in the middle of the night hit me a little too close to home. Either way, bring on some more Roger Sterling storyline, Episode 3.”

She then pointed me to the ONTD message board, where the majority of commenters continued crapping on the episode, thus proving her point, because if anonymous internet commenters don’t like something, that thing must be bad. In a related story, all things are bad.
